I\u2019ve always enjoyed the process of creating new worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP:<\/strong> What inspires you to write the stories you write?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> My curiosities inspire me. When I am curious about something, I want to learn everything about it and share that knowledge in my own way. So, I write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP:<\/strong> Interesting! What is your book about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> The Shape of New Beginnings is about a young black woman who wants to join a sorority. But there are <em>so<\/em> many options, and she changes so much that the dream sorority she wanted to join before college doesn\u2019t reflect the new her. The novel explores sexuality, self-reflection, and black sisterhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Misogynoir is guaranteed to be in the life of every black girl and woman, whether they notice it or not.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.starfishcitypublishing.com\/outside-the-city\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/College-Desk-1024x512.png\" alt=\"Typical desk of a college student: condoms, pens, laptop, notebooks, sticky notes reminders.\n\nLove note: Love you baby, from Cel. P.S. What that mouth do?\n\nLecture notes: more, especially after reading the first novel in the series. It is clear from reading the first few chapters what automatic reaction this book will be about. I feel like it could have taken some tips from the first novel and could have been hidden more until the middle of the book. Unless it is a red herring?\nNevertheless, the story is great so far, and I love the formatting! I can\u2019t wait to see what the rest of the book holds.\nI also love the use of motifs throughout the author\u2019s book. I love it when I find one while reading. It makes reading the book so much more special. Also, the Easter eggs are out of this world!\n If I could ask the author any questions, I would ask:\n1.\tWhat is your obsession with sex, transportation, and Beyonce?\n2.\tHow do you come up with your story concepts?\n3.\tAre you a magician?\nThat last question relates to some of the magic found in the author\u2019s work. Black girl magic, the magic to go anywhere in the world, the loss of childhood magic, actual magicians in books. Life really slaps you in the face that first year in college. For most people, it is their first time being away from home for an extended period, and with that freedom comes different responsibilities, experiences, lessons, and enlightenment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP:<\/strong> New experiences like misogynoir?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> Misogynoir is guaranteed to be in the life of every black girl and woman, whether they notice it or not. So, I wouldn\u2019t say misogynoir is a new college experience as it is very probable to have experienced it in childhood. Misogynoir should be talked about more so it could be easily identifiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP: <\/strong>I agree; it should be talked about more. But are we not at the point where we can easily identify it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> Not at all. People are trying to silence black women due to misogynoir. Megan Thee Stallion just released a song called Cobra, detailing the depression in her life, and it received a lot of backlash due to being too sad when sad songs from others get praised. And I don\u2019t even want to get into what\u2019s going on with Jada Pinkett Smith and her memoir. I just want people to recognize the backlash these women are getting is rooted in misogynoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP: <\/strong>Does your novel provide a guide on how to recognize it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> My novel covers a few areas in which black women experience misogynoir. Misogynoir can show up in many different ways and can be as explicit as outright hatred to as subtle as a dog whistle. So, I don\u2019t think there is a one-size-fits-all way of recognizing it. You just have to ask yourself if the situation would be different if it involved someone of another gender and race. Going back to your novel, a few of the characters are vegan. Were they difficult to write?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> Writing vegan characters was not difficult to write, especially since I live that lifestyle. As a black vegan, I wanted to show a different side of veganism that many people don\u2019t really get to see because of the stereotypes in mainstream media. I looked at my characteristics and the characteristics of my total liberation friends, which inspired some of my characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP:<\/strong> So, will there be vegan characters in your future novels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> Absolutely!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP:<\/strong> What are you working on now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong><\/strong> I am working on a literary fiction series. It\u2019s a lot of research, but I am very excited about it and can\u2019t wait to share it with the world. It\u2019s a little weird and complicated, so I\u2019m trying to get it to a place where it reads well. But I am up for the challenge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SCP:<\/strong> Can&#8217;t wait to read it! Anything else you would like to say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Doeliza:<\/strong> As a new author, I feel so supported, and I just want to thank everyone for taking a chance on my debut novel.
